On February 8-10 Troop 71 held its annual winter cabin weekend at Camp Long Lake.

We played a lot of video games again this year!!

After driving up to Camp Long Lake, we unloaded our gear at Rotary Cabin and settled in to play video games - all night.

The next morning came a hearty breakfast of pancakes and sausages.  No Boy Scout campout would be complete without a service project, so this year we moved cross country skis, poles and boots to a storage area.  Then back to Rotary Cabin for a light lunch of sandwiches and potato chips.  And of course, more video games.

A hike was scheduled for the afternoon.  Mr. Lilek led us through the snow and woods of the Wild 80.  We learned how deer make it through the winter. In the middle of the hike, Mr.Lilek assigned us a challenge. Earlier, four of us volunteered to dip cotton balls in vaseline, which turned out to be useful in the challenge of feeding a hungry Scoutmaster one roasted marshmallow. Our group used only the vaseline cotton balls and no kindling to roast the marshmallow, so even though ours was roasted first, it was completely inedible. We used the vaseline-covered marshmallow to light a good fire. Most groups lit good fires the right way.

We had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner that night. Then, another video game filled night. As usual, a few scouts took this opportunity to get some requirements signed off for rank advancement.

Everybody pitched in to clean up on Sunday morning and we left our site cleaner than we found it.
